Four experimental eco-lighting lanterns have been set up at Cape Kolka in Latvia. The lanterns use solar and wind energy to produce lighting. They also collect solar radiation statistics and other data for scientific research. Acquired data also will be useful to understand how significant is the economic advantage of using environmentally friendly technologies in local conditions.
The set up of these eco-lighting devices is a part of Latvia - Lithuania cross border cooperation programme 2007-2013 “Effective mechanism for implementing solar energy in Kurzeme and Klaipeda", and the “Solar Think Tank” project. The total project budget is 230 950 EUR, and 196 308 EUR of it has been funded by ERAF.
Cape Kolka within the Slitere National Park is one of the most visited tourist attraction in Kurzeme region. We are thrilled that our guests will be able to enjoy environmentally friendly infrastructure. Hopefully, these eco-latherns will be comfortable for those guests that visit Cape Kolka in early mornings, late evenings and nighttime, such as sunset and sunrise watchers, sea-anglers and other nature admirers.
We are happy that this is just one more step forward in shaping the Cape Kolka as a national and international ecotourism centre.
Without visiting Cape Kolka in person, you are welcome to visit our online gallery to see the brand new eco-lighting lanterns! Of course, you are even more welcome to experience and enjoy the stormy wather and the eco-lighting during this dark season by visiting Cape Kolka personally. Our visitor centre is open on weekends, but you can always stroll around and get to know the place also when it's closed. Take care of your personal safety if you decide to visit Cape Kolka in stormy weather as it has been forcasted this weekend already!
Have a safe and enjoyable trip!
